A 3-year-old New Mexico boy shot his father in the buttocks and the bullet ricocheted and hit his pregnant mother, police said.
The horrific incident occurred Saturday inside a motel room in Albuquerque when the child found the loaded handgun inside his mother's purse, reports TV Station KRQE.
The boy's 2-year-old sister was in the room, but was not injured, police said.
The boy found the 9 mm handgun after he was looking for an iPad in the purse.
The father was transported to a hospital and was released Saturday, police said. The woman, who was 8-months pregnant, was hit in the shoulder and also taken to a hospital.
On the kid's side, it's a horrible accident that happened, but the parents are still culpable.
She remains under medical care for evaluation, but is expected to recover from her injuries, the station reported.
The District Attorney's Office will determine if the couple will face charges for negligence, Officer Simon Drobik, of the Albuquerque Police Department, said. The child will not face charges, he said.
"On the kid's side, it's a horrible accident that happened, but the parents are still culpable," he said. "They should have secured the gun."
The mother purchased the gun on Friday, police said.

The unidentified family, which includes the children's grandmother and two dogs, had been living at the America's Best Value Inn for a week.
The state's Children Youth and Families Department now has custody of the children for 48 hours as authorities continue to investigate, the station reported.
