VA chief backs outside care as 'choice' program falters - Salon

WASHINGTON (AP) — Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald says he is committed to a new law aimed at making it easier for veterans to get private health care.

Skeptical lawmakers insist the VA is not moving fast enough to put the law in place.

McDonald told a Senate panel Thursday he supports outside care to avoid long waits that have plagued VA facilities nationwide.

Forty-two senators wrote to McDonald this week, urging him to step up efforts to enroll veterans in non-VA health care. The bipartisan group also warned him to back off any effort to redirect some of the $10 billion Congress allocated for outside care as part of an agency overhaul approved last year.

The VA says few veterans are taking advantage of the new “choice” program.
