The Detroit mother of two young children whose bodies were found in a deep freezer is expected to be charged with child abuse, among other crimes, police said Wednesday.
The mom was arrested Tuesday after the bodies of a 14-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy were discovered at the family's east side apartment complex while a bailiff was conducting an eviction of the property. Their identities were not immediately released.
Police say the mother confessed to killing her children, and formal charges are expected pending the results of the autopsies.
During the eviction, a crew found the body of the girl first, and then her younger brother. Authorities did not immediately say how long they might have been left inside the freezer.
A resident of the apartment complex alerted police to the children's mother, who was at a separate location, authorities said in a news release.
"Terrible find this afternoon," Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters on Tuesday, according to NBC station WDIV. "It was during that eviction process that they discovered two young children in a freezer ... they were inside a bag and appeared to be frozen."
Craig added that there were two other children who were living at the home who have been placed into protective custody. One is a twin brother of the 11-year-old and the other is 17, WDIV reported.
One neighbor told WDIV that the brother and sister used to play with her stepchildren, and she never noticed any signs of abuse. "I would have never expected this," neighbor Tori Childs said.
