BOSTON (AP) — A decorated Boston police officer remains in critical condition after being shot in the face by a man he and other gang unit officers had stopped in car.
Officer John Moynihan has been in a medically induced coma since the Friday night shooting.
The other officers fatally shot the suspect, 41-year-old Angelo West, who had several gun convictions.
Police Commissioner William Evans said 34-year-old Moynihan was hit just below his right eye, and the bullet lodged below his left ear. Evans called Moynihan "a fighter" and said "I am sure he's going to pull through."
The former Army Ranger and Iraq veteran was honored at the White House last year for helping save wounded transit police officer Richard Donohue after the April 2013 gun battle with the Boston Marathon bombers. Donohue said Saturday "everyone is wishing him well."
