Breaking: Helicopter crashes near Edgewater Drive and Colonial - Orlando Sentinel

A small helicopter crashed Sunday afternoon near Edgewater Drive and Seville Place on Sunday afternoon. There was no initial reports about the fate of the pilot or if any possible passengers were injured.

The crash left debris scattered across the area north of Colonial Drive and set off a small ground fire.

Ben Brown, who lives in the neighborhood, said the helicopter crashed into a house in Alameda Street.

"It blew up, and part of the rotor landed in a neighbor's backyard and knocked down a fence, three houses away," Brown said.

Brown said his street lost power after the incident.

Another neighbor, Donn Carr, says there was little noise from the initial explosion.

"That's what surprised me," Carr said. "The sound was not large, not what I expected. But the impact was very solid. Boom! Then dead silence."

Orange County Fire Department was letting the ground fire burn until Orlando Utilities Commission could make sure electrical power was shut off in the area.

Rescue crews are on scene now and authorities are trying to clear people from the area. Edgewater Drive north of Colonial Drive is cordoned off by Orlando police.
