The trooper killed was Trevor Casper, Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels tweeted late Tuesday and the Wisconsin Professional Police Association confirmed Wednesday morning on Facebook.
Casper, from Kiel, had just graduated from the State Patrol Academy in December.
"Yesterday marked the End of Watch for Wisconsin State Trooper Trevor Casper. Our hearts go out to his fellow officers, his friends, and especially his family," reads a statement posted on the WPPA's Facebook page. "May we never forget his sacrifice and that of his loved ones who shared and supported his devotion to our common security."
Condolences for Casper poured into a Facebook page created in his memory.
At about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the trooper was following a vehicle in Fond du Lac that fit the description of one being driven by a bank robbery suspect. After making contact, there was an exchange of gunfire that left both dead, the state Department of Justice said.
"We at the DOJ join the Wisconsin law enforcement community and all the citizens of the state in mourning the loss of the Wisconsin State Trooper who died in the line of duty trying to keep our citizens safe," Attorney General Brad Schimel said in written statement. "I ask for your prayers for this officer and his family."
Earlier in the day, the suspect had robbed a bank in Wausaukee, fired a handgun and fled, Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve told Action Media in Fond du Lac. Authorities later found the body of a man shot to death along a road east of Wausaukee, possibly victim of a carjacking. A vehicle from the robbery was found nearby.
Casper, who was from Kiel, was new to the State Patrol. He was one of 47 new officers who was sworn in and got his badge on Dec. 19, 2014.
