NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A jury has been selected in the federal racketeering trial of former Bergen County Democratic leader Joseph Ferriero.

The 12 jurors and four alternates picked Wednesday will be sworn in Thursday, the day opening arguments are due to start.

The 57-year-old Ferriero faces a five-count indictment.

Prosecutors say he took cash in exchange for using his political influence to help smooth the way for a Virginia-based developer to win a contract to build the ill-fated Xanadu complex at the Meadowlands.

The Hackensack resident is also accused of lobbying local municipal officials in Bergen County on behalf of a software company looking for municipal contracts, without disclosing that he would get a kickback on any contracts the company won.
