One of the defendants named in lawsuits filed by the parents of Clemson student Tucker Hipps, who died during a fraternity-organized run, is the son of a Delaware congressman.
Delaware Rep. John Carney’s oldest son, Samuel Quillen Carney, is named in the wrongful death lawsuit brought on behalf of Cynthia and Gary Hipps, whose 19-year-old son died last Sept. 22 when he went headfirst off the Lake Hartwell Bridge during a a pre-dawn run with other pledges and brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Besides Sam Carney, the wrongful death and survival actions brought on behalf of the Hipps' family name Thomas Carter King, Campell T. Starr, South Carolina Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc. and Clemson University.
Carney and his wife, Tracey Quillen Carney, released a statement Tuesday, saying: "No one - certainly no parent - can feel anything but sympathy for this family's grief and anger. We have faith that those trusted with investigative and legal authority will act based on facts. Our advice to Sam since the tragedy in September has been to tell the truth and remember that any detail might help. That continues to be our message to him."
The lawsuits filed by Tucker Hipps’ parents seek $25 million plus punitive damages.
