A drive that ended with one person dead and two injured Monday morning at the gates of the National Security Agency started with the theft of an SUV at an Elkridge motel, Howard County Police confirmed.
A 60-year-old man from Baltimore told officers that he had picked up two people in the city and headed to the Terrace Motel on Washington Boulevard, according to police. The trio checked in at 7:30 a.m. but when the man was out of the room the other two people stole his Ford SUV and fled, police said.
It's unclear how the two people ended up in a confrontation with police at the entrance of one of the world's largest spy agencies. But the NSA has said the driver refused to heed the commands of a security officer and sped toward an NSA police vehicle.
An officer opened fire and one of the people in the SUV was killed and another injured, according to the NSA. A police officer was also injured.
Few other details were available about the incident except one: The two suspects were wearing women's clothes, Howard County Police confirmed.
The suspects and the injured officer have not been identified.
A person who answered the phone at the motel Tuesday morning declined to comment.
