Is There a Connection Between the Schweich, Jackson Suicides? - CBS Local

CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) – Nearing the end of their month-long investigation into the apparent suicide of Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich, Clayton police now have a new challenge – determining whether the apparent suicide this weekend of Schweich’s spokesman Spence Jackson is connected.

Detective Lt. Don Bass says Clayton police will be sharing information with investigators in Jefferson City, Missouri, but at this point, there is no clear connection between the two deaths.

Jefferson City police announced at a news conference that Jackson left behind a suicide note, but they have not revealed its content or themes.

Before Jackson’s death Sunday, Clayton police had not seen anything in the emails and texts between the two that drew their attention. But now they’ll give those conversations a second look for possible clues.

“We’re not seeing anything that really establishes they had a close, personal relationship,” Bass says.

Jackson was not under any scrutiny by investigators in the Schweich suicide, Bass says, and to his knowledge, Jackson had not been interviewed by Clayton police.

At the time of his death, Schweich told some close friends he believed he was the target of a whispering campaign about being Jewish to hinder his run for governor.

Clayton police told KMOX News last week they found no evidence of a whispering campaign, nor of bullying, threats or blackmail, in his electronic devices.

Earlier this month, Joplin businessman David Humphreys signed an affidavit saying Republican Party Chairman John Hancock had told him in a meeting that Schweich was Jewish.

Bass says investigators are “still looking for a motive” in Schweich’s death.
